Cubagua Island ̶ or Cua-Hua, as its indigenous population named it ̶ is a small Venezuelan island situated in the southeastern Caribbean, which played a pivotal role in the 16th-century pearl trade. It served as the center for pearl harvesting and was the first Spanish town in the New World, leading to the foundation of the city of Nueva Cádiz in 1528.
The island’s location near rich pearl oyster beds and its strategic position made it a key player in the Spanish pearl trade. The city of Nueva Cádiz became a hub for pearl harvesting and trade, attracting a significant population. Cubagua was known for producing large quantities of small pearls, making it a significant supplier to the European market.

Overexploitation and the discovery of new pearl oyster beds elsewhere eventually led to the decline of the pearl industry on Cubagua. The city of Nueva Cádiz was largely abandoned in the 1540s due to the depletion of pearl oyster beds, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
Nowadays, Cubagua Island remains a site of archeological significance, with the ruins of Nueva Cádiz being declared a National Monument in 1979, and a growing tourism industry.
